AdDRESSing Your Confidence

Dresses are a fantastic feature of any wardrobe. Whether you’re a girly girl, or a tomboy at heart, wearing a classy number now and again can feel amazing. The right dress is a power symbol, like a decent car, or a flashy watch. The perfect dress ensures you’ll turn every head in a room. No matter your tastes, that power is sure to feel great.

But, sometimes, we all go through a bit of a wobbly when it comes to dresses. They’re a clothing choice which needs a fair bit of confidence. There’s no getting around the fact that you’ll have to show more of your body in a dress than you may at other times. And, that takes guts! But, it usually does pay off. If you’re having a crisis about the prom dresses you can’t get yourself to try on, or just a dress for a business meeting, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to look at a few ways you can address your lack of dress confidence, and get back into the swing of things.

Do the prep

As mentioned above, wearing a dress means showing more of yourself than you may be accustomed to. That can be tough. But, if you know you that those parts are primed, you’ll find the exposure much easier to deal with. Obviously, your first step should be to shave and moisturize your legs. If you have the confidence to reveal the fuzz, then good for you. But, most of us can’t go that far, and even one day’s worth of growth can stop us reaching for that dress. So, make sure to shave before you even attempt getting your legs out. Think, too, about applying some fake tan. You don’t want to over the top here, but a sun-kissed glow is always a great way to bolster your confidence.

Small practice sessions

Like anything, dress confidence is all about practice. If you jump straight in with a big event, you may struggle to find the necessary courage to go all out. But, if you get into the habit of wearing a dress for small trips, you’ll soon get used to the exposure. So, instead of waiting for your next night out, wear that dress to the shop, or on a walk around the block. In no time, you’ll feel much more comfortable. You may even start to crave the freedom dress wearing offers.

Believe you look good

There’s no denying that this is easier said than done, but believing you look good in dresses is a sure way to find your awesome. Half of the battle with a dress is the way you wear it. If you don’t believe you’re owning that outfit, your posture will become hunched and defensive. That kind of thing really shows with a revealing dress. Instead, believe you look terrific. Hold your head high, and your back straight, and strut your stuff. Before you know it, your belief is sure to come true.

Monochromatic Magic

Monochromatic: Containing or using one color. It’s fashion – look it up!

But seriously, this is my first time toying with a monochrome look and I think I’m obsessed. This plum color is sleek and sexy and perfect for fall.

Of course you can play with other colors like camel and olive green; or even pink and lime green. The color wheel is your oyster!

I paired this Fashion Nova bomber jacket with a super comfy, velvet Forever 21 bodysuit with jeans and over the knee boots from Target. Each piece was purchased separately but hanging near each other in my closet, I knew I had to at least attempt the look.

Check out your closet for a monochromatic look. Let me know how you play with one color.

Steal my look:

Mixing it up with Prints

Can we all agree that rules are made to be broken? If everyone followed the rules, life would be boring, right? I’m not going all criminal on you guys, but I do think the riles of fashion should surely be toyed with. Like wearing white after Labor Day, or pairing brown with black, or mixing prints and shades. Sometimes you gotta say screw it and do what you want and wear whatever makes you feel beautiful!

I’m a strong supporter of mixing prints, wearing white after Labor Day, and paring brown and black. And although I don’t do it often, this post has inspired me to embrace some rule breaking a little more often.

I literally threw this look together because I thought it was cute, comfy, casual and I love these easy camo sneakers. Seriously, wear what makes you feel your best!
I’ve also enlisted the help of my fashionable friend and fellow rule breaker, Krystina, to help me with mixing prints outfit inspiration. She has paired the perfect-for-fall star sweater with Burberry rain boots. Rule followers may have slipped into a pair of black boots, but rule breakers step outside the norm.
There is no ryhme or reason to mixing prints or shades, ya just do it. Although this is on-trend, be sure to stand out by making your looks perfectly suit you. Have fun mixing it up!

God Is Dope

As I type this post, I’m walking on the treadmill listening to “Sing Me To Sleep”, the cool down song Nada incorporated into our weekly Fitness Dance Class just weeks before her passing. It’s still difficult to know she’s no longer with us, and even harder knowing that that world around us is devastation.

Positive news is few and far between these days, and we tend to forget that we can’t take life for granted. Simple actions like waking up in the morning, being able to hug our loved ones, eating, having power, being able to get on the treadmill – these are all things that people around the world aren’t able to experience on a daily basis.

Look up right now, and say “Thank You God” for all life’s simple blessings. God Is Dope, guys! He’s the reason you woke up this morning. He’s the reason you can hug on your loved ones and eat a hearty meal every day. Don’t forget that.

I saw this God Is Dope hat on the Snapchat story of one of my friends and I instantly knew I had to have one. Thanks, Deanna for the link!

Because I know all the things He has done for me and will do for me and those close to me, I wanted to rep MY God fashionably! This is a constant reminder that even though life is a whirlwind around me, I am blessed.

3 for $30 God Is Dope dad hats are available on godisdope.com in multiple color options. I chose this black version, red, and light denim.

About God Is Dope:

“Our mission is to bring awareness to God in our own way…through fashion, entertainment, and influence.”

Fitness Fashion

Let me tell you guys a quick story. I used to hate working out. I mean HATE! I would get anxiety just thinking about it. Then I realized, being healthy is important. Not to mention, being in my late 20s with high blood pressure was not a good look. And you gotta look good!

I ended up in a relationship with a guy who would get on these health kicks and talked me into them too. Being with him, I eventually had to get over my fear of being fit because he signed us up for a gym membership. I couldn’t let it go to waste. Even though we’re no longer together, I am forever grateful to him for getting my ass in the gym. It’s where I met the beautiful and talented Nada who was a personal trainer and fitness dance instructor at Franklin Athletic Club (may you rest in peace, love!) and where I realized working out isn’t so bad. While it still hurts, I have come to enjoy the gym. I’ve been able to meet some great new people, lose some inches, join classes like dance and strength, and just overall feel better about life.

I by no means claim to be a fitness expert or think I’m totally fit just yet, but I am pleased and proud of my progress (which I owe A LOT to Nada ❤). However, I will say, getting in the gym got a little easier when I realized I could look cute too. No need to break the bank stocking up on sports bras and compression pants either. Where do I shop for athletic wear? Old Navy is my absolute favorite place! I get so many compliments on my outfit choices and each piece is often $20 or less. I’ve also come to enjoy TJ Maxx as an option for athletic wear.

This super fun and bright look comes from a combination of Old Navy and TJ Maxx. Top is by Betsey Johnson, and of course was a fraction of the original price coming from TJ Maxx. The pants are by Old Navy, and running shoes are from the clearance section at DSW. I love the way Old Navy athletic wear fits. Being a girl with hips, the pants hug me in all the right places.

If you’re anything like me, stop being afraid of the gym and just go! Even if it’s to walk on the treadmill. Just remember you can always look cute doing it.
