Magazine Nails Tutorial

Have you ever wondered how to get nails straight from the pages of Elle Magazine? Ok, so it’s not as dramatic as it sounds but I love how fun magazine nails look and the technique is so simple.

To obtain magazine nails you will need:

  • A magazine
  • Scissors
  • Nail polish (nude or white and a top coat)
  • A cup of water (I kept it classy with a shot glass 😉 )

Step 1:

Cut up a few pages out of a magazine. You can use words or patterns to apply to your nail.

Step 2:

Paint your nails and make sure they are completely dry before the magazine is applied. I prefer using nude or white polish so the ink from the magazine transfers clearly.

Step 3;

Dip a magazine cut out in water and place it over your nail face down. Press hard on your nail for about 15 seconds so that the print fully transfers.

Step 4:

Remove the magazine strip and wipe off any excess ink with water. Apply a clear top coat and that’s it!

I opted to only apply the magazine to my “fashion nail” and added a midi ring for pizzazz but don’t be afraid to use the magazine nails technique on all of your nails.

Have you ever tried magazine nails?

Best Bronzer: Golden Goddess

Beauty fact about me: I don’t wear makeup. But that has now changed since I finally made my first real makeup purchase! I own a tube of mascara and in high school I wore eye shadow for homecoming and prom but other than that, I’ve donned a makeup-less face for most of my life. So what changed? The fact that I get an awesome discount on cosmetics and my coworkers suggested I start wearing bronzer.

My discount comes with Purely Pro Cosmetics, a proud Michigan business making high quality cosmetics comparable to MAC.

Purely Pro Bronzer

Purely Pro history: Margery Krevsky founded Purely Pro Cosmetics, a division of Productions Plus-The Talent Shop, a national talent agency. In 2005 Margery began formulating the line for professional models and talent who were looking for a superior quality makeup line that would last under the long days and intense demands of bright lights and showroom floors.  Based on feedback from some of the toughest critics in the industry, the result is a line of mineral and classic makeup designed with the latest cutting edge technology and purest ingredients to last and enhance.

Another fact about me, I love to tan! My grandma always tells me I don’t need to tan because I was born with a “natural tan” but what grandma doesn’t understand is that I love that sun-kissed glow! Of course living in Michigan I can’t lay out whenever I please so my options are tanning booths and spray tans. And we all know the harmful side effects of tanning booths and spray tans can get pricey so my lovely coworkers suggested I just start wearing bronzer. I took them up on that suggestion and recently purchased a Purely Pro bronzer called Golden Goddess. Because I am not a makeup kinda girl I wanted to make sure it looked completely natural and it certainly does. It also gives a matte finish that makes my skin look smooth.

Left: no bronzer Right: bronzer

Left: no bronzer Right: bronzer

Golden Goddess by Purely Pro offers the right amount of bronze without looking too heavy or painted on. I am still new to makeup so I have much to learn but so far I very much enjoy this brozer to give me a little bit of a tan! And did I mention Purely Pro products are hypoallergenic, not tested on animals, and they carry vegan brushes?

How To Make Your Nail Polish Last Longer

Problem: You notice some of your nail polishes are getting older and beginning to change colors and/or dry out and you fear this will happen to more of your nail polish.

Solution: Put your nail polish in the refrigerator! Leaving nail polish in the refrigerator for a few weeks will increase its lifespan. Once you are ready to use the nail polish you have stored in the refrigerator, be sure to remove it a few hours before using. the nail polish needs to be room temperature as cold nail polish will not apply to the nail properly.

So move over that mayo and slide your China Glaze and Essie right in the fridge. Happy refrigerating!

Million Dollar Question: How To Get Rid Of Oily Skin?

Are you an oily skin sufferer? If you are, let us all telepathically join hands and have a moment of silence for our shiny foreheads and moist T-zones.

Ok, maybe that was a gross thought but if you suffer from oily skin, you can certainly understand how it feels.

Oily skin is caused most in part by genetics. I can attribute my skin to my mom and grandpa. Geez, thanks guys! Hormones are also a cause of oily skin. So pregnant women and women on their menstrual cycles tend to produce more oil than normal. However, one bright side to oily skin is that it reduces the risk of wrinkles.

Sensitive skin wipes

St. Ives apricot scrub

As a result of my oily skin, I have been looking for great products or remedies to help limit the oil. I’ve found that exfoliating daily with St. Ives Apricot Scrub and using  Simple exfoliating wipes (purchased at Walgreens) have vastly helped but if possible I’d love to have more control of my forehead sheen.

If you have oily skin and know of a great solution and/or product, please feel free to share your knowledge!

Nail Tips You Can Use

No matter if you have browsed F.A.B Cocktail or know me personally, you are sure to learn I LOVE NAIL POLISH! As a result, I have learned a few nail tips and tricks on my nail polish/nail art journey that I would like to share.

China Glaze Mint Nail Polish

Tip 1: Water Your Nails

OK, so your nails aren’t plants and watering them won’t make them grow (I don’t think) but holding them under cold water for about 30 seconds can speed up nail polish drying time. For whatever scientific reason, water reacts to nail polish by making it solid and dry. Now don’t finish painting your nails and immediately run to the sink. They must air dry momentarily before water can work its true magic. Water on freshly painted nails can cause smudging and we don’t want that!

Tip 2: Wash Your Nails

This is a weird one but I discovered recently that it actually works. We’ve all had that nail polish color that seeps into our nails and stains them – like a dark purple or deep blue. But don’t worry. Remove the nail polish as you normally would with nail polish remover and if any color remains, use soap, water and a wash cloth to scrub your nails and remove the color stain. It’s easy and leaves your nails super clean.

Tip 3: Freeze Your Nails

I saved this tip for last because not everyone loves the cold but this is actually my personal favorite nail tip. If you are looking for alternate ways to dry nails faster, stick them in the freezer! Unlike nail tip number one, you don’t have to wait to stick your hands in the freezer. Right after your nails are painted, scurry to the kitchen and hang out by the freezer for 2-5 minutes and your nails will be completely dry!

Beauty Products I Can’t Live Without

I will get right to it. I love to shop and search to find new things; and I love even more when new things find me! The following is a list of the top 5 beauty products that I can’t imagine living without from this day forward.

Mary Kay Lip Mask

Mary Kay Lip Mask

As you may know exfoliating is an important part of keeping skin looking and feeling healthy but did you know it is just as important to exfoliate your lips as it is to exfoliate your skin? Yup! A friend of mine was selling Mary Kay products for a while and suggested I try satinlips, Mary Kay’s lip mask/exfoliating rub. Gently apply the mask to your lips, let it sit for 1-2 minutes and remove with warm water and paper towel or wash cloth. This process gets rid of the dead, dry skin on your lips leaving them super smooth. I love this stuff especially topped off with a good lip balm!

Pantine Pro-V Sculpting Wax

Pantine Prov

So…I haven’t told or shown many people but I got a bad hair cut a few weeks ago. Never get impulse bangs. Ever! I simply hate mine and am currently taking biotin pills daily to help my hair grow back faster. Please pray for my hair’s speedy recovery. Anyhow, to keep the bangs looking somewhat decent I decided to try sculpting them into place with Pantine Pro-V Sculpting Wax. This texturizing sculpting wax helps secure my bangs and it also smells really good, like shampoo! I have found that it helps keep curls in place as well.

I won’t bore you with another personal story but in sum, I was referred to the owner of AcheAway as the company was in need of my professional services. I was given a sample of the product and was honestly instantly amazed! Acheaway is a pain reliever made with natural ingredients including mineral water from the Michigan Basin located in Mt. Clemens, MI. The water is estimated to be over 600 million years old and filled with 34 natural minerals. It has proven to take away aches and pains of many real and satisfied customers and now me.  I used the gel rub (there are other products including massage oil and bath soak) when I was experiencing menstrual cramps and within a short time the pain was gone and I had no more cramps the duration of my cycle. Wowza!

German Foot cream

Foot rub

I know I wasn’t supposed to bore you with another story but I can’t help it. During the preparation for an ERollins Group (Michigan-based Fashion Marketing Firm) event in November called Styles In the City I was seeking sponsors. GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT contacted me noting the company would be happy to become a sponsor and supply all of our models and guests with samples. I was a little apprehensive as it would be foot cream at a fashion event but they won me over. GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT gives feet a cooling sensation all while it works to smooth rough, dry feet. It’s great in the winter and even better in the summer when feet are constantly exposed. And I recently learned it is sold at Nordstrom.

Sinful Colors & love&beauty

Sinful Colors and Forever 21 Nail Polish

“I love when I find a quality product that’s less than $5,” said everyone! Sinful Colors and love&beauty, Forever 21’s nail polish brand, are quality nail polishes that, in my opinion, are as just as good as China Glaze and Esse. You can find Sinful Colors at Walgreen for just $1.99 and love&beauty at Forever 21 stores for just $2.80. The colors of each brand are always bold, high quality and last days without chipping.

There you have it: the top 5 beauty  products I can’t live without! What products are you addicted to?

Hair Bow How-To

You’ve seen 9 million hair bow tutorials on Pinterest but have you ever really tried it? I highly recommend trying a hair bow! Especially for rainy days or days you just don’t feel like pulling out the flat iron or curling iron. Hair is a lot of work but hair bows are easy to create but still look like you put a lot of effort into your hair for the day. So….why not try it? Here’s the easiest way I know how to create a hair bow.

All you need is a hair tie, bobby pins and hair spray.

Start by putting your hair in a half pony/half bun.

Hair bow bun

Take the “tail” of the pony bun and pin it to the back of your head.

Hair bow piece

The “tail” will create the look of the middle of the bow. Take both sides and use bobby pins to pin hair in the form of the sides of a bow. Layered haircuts and fly-aways can be tricky but you can just continue to bobby pin any remaining hairs or hair spray them down.

Complete hair bow

This look is super easy to achieve and can be done on any hair type!

Split Perso-Nail-Ity

You may recall about a month ago I tried China Glaze Tranzitions nail polish. I enjoyed the color but I was not jumping up and down about the results after it was applied. However, I said I would try other colors because I thought I would be more impressed. I was…..correct! Ding! Ding! Ding!

I bought Split Perso-Nail-Ity, a dusty pink color; at work (two cheers for my discount!) and it looks super cool on my nails.

Pink Tranzitions Polish

Split Person-Nail-Ity offers more of a noticeable color transition. And once again, all that was needed was a clear top coat. I plan on experimenting with more intricate designs and incorporating my other China Glaze Tranzitions color, Shape Shifter to see what cool nail art I can come up with.
