5 Things That Will Boost Your Happiness

December 5, 2022

We all have those days (or weeks, or months) when everything feels gray. No matter how hard we try, we just can’t seem to shake the funk. And this can really feel like the most awful place to be in—but that doesn’t mean you have to stay there. If you’re in need of a happiness boost, give these five things a try. They may not provide a long-term solution to your problems, but they will definitely help you feel better in the moment.

1. Connect with Loved Ones

When you’re feeling down, reach out to your friends and family members. Talking to someone who cares about you can help you feel less alone and more supported. If you can’t physically be with your loved ones, pick up the phone or hop on a video call. A few minutes of conversation can make a world of difference. Human connection can make all the difference.

2. Get Active

Exercise is a great way to boost your mood. When you work out, your body releases endorphins, which have mood-elevating effects. Even if you don’t feel like working out, getting moving can make you feel better. Take a brisk walk around the block or do some simple stretches at home. If you love hiking—get out and do that too. Just make sure to put on your mens thermal socks and wrap up warm first!

3. Do Something Nice for Someone Else

Helping others is a great way to boost your own happiness levels. Whether you volunteer your time at a local organization or simply perform random acts of kindness, giving back will make you feel good—guaranteed. When you start to see that you’re making a difference to others, it can start to make a difference to you too.

4. Savor the Good Moments (and Let go of the Bad)

It’s human nature to dwell on our missteps and mistakes while downplaying our successes and accomplishments. If you find yourself dwelling on the negative, take a step back and try to focus on the positive aspects of your life—no matter how small they may be. Maybe you had a great conversation with a colleague this morning or finally tackled that pesky project you’ve been procrastinating on for weeks. Whatever it is, reminding yourself of your accomplishments, no matter how small, can help shift your perspective and give you a much-needed confidence boost.

5. Treat Yourself!

Last but not least, don’t forget to pamper yourself from time to time—you deserve it! Whether it’s buying yourself a new book, taking yourself out to lunch, or enjoying a long bubble bath, do something special for yourself every once in awhile. Indulging in some much-needed “me time” will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever challenges come your way next.

These are just five of the many things that can help boost your happiness levels—so don’t hesitate to experiment until you find what works best for you! And remember: even on your darkest days, there is always something to be grateful for.
