What to Bring to New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is right around the corner and while designers are putting the final touches on their Spring 2014 collections, it’s time for you to start your Fashion Week checklist. I have attended New York Fashion Week for the past 4 seasons so I get a lot of questions about what to expect and what to bring. Even though I sadly won’t be attending this season (I’m going back with a bang in February) I figured I could still spread a little NYFW knowledge and cheer!
Below is a list of things that you’ll need to survive NYFW.

Metro Card and Cash:
Taking the subway to Lincoln Center (where most of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week shows take place ) or a stop nearest your fashion show location is the most convenient as a Metro Card is $39 for a week pass. However, there will be days when the subway just doesn’t work because of time constraints or unscheduled mainince. So for this, you WILL need to master the art of hailing a cab to reach your fashion show destination. Moral of the story, always carry emergency cab fair!

Metro Card

 A Big Bag:
While large bags and totes can be very stylish, carrying a large bag while going from show to show at NYFW is essential to store all of your belongings. For starters, trotting around New York City can be murder on your feet. God bless the ones who can last a week in stilettos, but for those of us who need to travel in flats, a large bag is the perfect place to carry an extra pair of shoes. Not to mention, a big bag can house snacks to help get you through the day and all the cool free gifts you may snag from show to show.

Business Cards:
Because fashion week is swarming with fellow bloggers, PR pros and even celebs, you always want to have your business cards with your contact info on hand. You never know who you may run into while entering or exiting a show. My first time at fashion week I ran into Kelly Cutrone of People’s Revolution. We chatted for a bit giving me the opporunity to give her my business card. So always be prepared to hand out a business card because you never know what connections can come from a common interest of fashion.

Long days and long nights can plus a change in atmosphere can take a toll on the body. In order to stay healthy during NYFW, be sure to take lots of vitamins, stay hydrated with water (there’s lots of free water offered at Lincoln Center!) and take airborne to build up your immune system. I recommend taking airborne before arriving to New York, after your first big day at fashion week and upon returning home.

Fashion GPS:
Fashion GPS is a fashion app that keeps track of your fashion week schedule in partnership with Style.com. Attending numerous shows can become hectic and the Fashion GPS app will store your fashion show invitations and create calendars with fashion show reminders. Be advised though that not all fashion show invites are Fashion GPS capable but more often than not, they are. In all, Fashion GPS will help keep you organized throughout the week an even update you with high res photos of certain designer collections.

Bonus* Edit Your Outfits Before Packing:
One of the greatest perks of NYFW is the chance for you to express your personal style. So before you begin packing up your stylish digs, plan each outfit in advance. Take photos of your outfit choices and edit each look accordingly. This will help packing go smoothly and eliminate extra baggage because you will of course need room in your suite case to pack the fabulous new clothes and shoes you got while shopping on 5th Ave and in Soho!

And there you have it, my list of New York Fashion Week essentials! Is there anything you would add to the list?
