First thing’s first. Let’s start with a few reasons why you should start a blog:
- You have something to share with the world
- You are creative and passionate about a topic
- You want to make money
If you identify with at least one of the three points listed above, read on for 5 tips to start a blog.
Find your niche
To start, you need a topic. Figure out what you love and what you are passionate about. For me, fabcocktail.com is a place where I can share stories to inspire others through fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and more. You’ll notice my main focus is fashion but there’s some food, faith, and product reviews in there too. So to begin, what is it that you want to focus on and share with your audience? You’ll also need a goal. My goal is to inspire! Start with writing down a few words that describe you and what you stand for. This will help you hone in on your niche.
Invest in the right tools
You absolutely need to invest not only time but money into making sure your blog looks great. You know the saying, “Nothing in life is free”? Well, that’s very true. It takes money to make money and you need to spend a few coins if you want to start a blog and make it look good. There are free avenues you may take but if you really want to be noticed in order to make profit, my best advice would be to invest in the right tools for blog aesthetics, photos and video. Fabcocktail.com is on the WordPress platform and hosted on SiteGround. I’ve also purchased a few tools like a ring light and props to help my photos pop. Blogs are made to be visual and you need the right tools for the visuals to be on point.
Search Engine Optimization
SEO is basically the science behind getting your blog seen. With keywords and keyword phrases, you are able to get your blog or specific blog posts ranked higher on Google (the largest search engine). Much like the tip above, you must be willing to invest time into SEO. To begin, install the Yoast SEO plugin onto your computer or if you’re a WordPress blogger, installing and managing the plugin directly through WP is much easier. There are also great SEO training courses and webinars out there so do your research. SEO isn’t easy to learn but it’s an absolute MUST when it comes to starting a blog.
While blogging may be an outlet for you (it totally is for me), don’t forget there’s a lot of groundwork associated with it. And it will either have a positive or negative effect on your analytics. Much like SEO, knowing and reviewing your analytics is a science and extremely important if you want to know what’s performing well and even what’s not performing. Reviewing analytics can help you understand what type of content you should create for future posts.
Having a blog means having social media, too. Figure out at least three social media platforms you love and promote your blog there. My top 3 social media platforms are – Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook. After you have implemented these 5 ways on how to start a blog, then the money will follow! Social media is the easiest way to rack in the coins but you can also earn funds through ads on your blog.
I hope these 5 tips to start a blog are helpful. Just remember, be true to yourself and what you love. As long as you are passionate, the rest will become easier and easier. Happy blogging! xoxo
